See beyond what meets the eye – the optics of a monocular
When choosing a monocular, the most important factor is the optics. No matter how small and light it is, if you can’t see your subject clearly, it’s not much use. That’s why it’s important to consider the key specifications, so you can judge the performance of a monocular and whether it’s right for your needs.
Magnification and objective diameter
The first numbers you’ll often find in the product names – such as 10x42, 8x25, 7x42. They show the two key specs of any monocular: magnification (the first number) and objective diameter (the second number).
Magnification tells you how much closer you can bring your subject. A simple formula to keep in mind is:
Magnification x 100 = the distance in metres at which the subject appears to be 100 m away
So, if you spot a bird 800 m away, an 8x magnification monocular will make it look as if it’s just 100 m away. With 10x magnification, that same bird could be 1,000 m away and still appear to be 100 m away. However, higher isn’t always better. Whether your subject appears detailed depends on the objective diameter, glass quality, coating, and overall optical quality. Also, higher magnification can sometimes be a drawback, especially on unstable surfaces like water, where the image is more likely to shake. Plus, a higher magnification often means a smaller field of view, making it harder to locate and follow moving objects.
The objective diameter is the size of the lens at the front of the monocular. When it comes to image quality, bigger is better, as a larger lens lets more light through, making the image brighter. This is especially important if you’re often out in low-light conditions. However, a larger objective also means a heavier monocular, so if you’re only out in bright conditions, a smaller lens might be more convenient.
Field of view
Another number to consider when choosing a monocular is the field of view. This measures how wide an area you can see through the monocular from 1,000 metres away. Sometimes, you might see this in degrees instead. To convert it to metres, just multiply by 17.45. High magnification monoculars tend to have a narrower field of view. If you enjoy studying landscapes or historical buildings in detail, this won’t be an issue. However, a wider field of view is more useful when speed is involved, helping you to track a bird in flight or a fast-moving athlete.
Close focus
Sometimes, you don’t need to look far to see something special. If you want to observe butterflies or other insects through your monocular, a low close focus distance is a big advantage. This is the shortest distance at which a monocular can produce a sharp and clear image.
Twilight factor and relative brightness
From the magnification and objective diameter of a monocular, you can calculate two standard values that help compare different models: the twilight factor and relative brightness. The twilight factor describes how well details can be seen in low light. The higher the number, the better. Relative brightness indicates how bright the image appears through the monocular.
However, please note: These values don’t take the quality of the optics into account. High-quality glass and special coatings can significantly enhance a monocular’s performance. All BRESSER monoculars use at least BK-7 optical glass for good image quality. For even better detail and brightness, you can opt for models with BaK-4 glass. And when it comes to coatings, which reduce reflections and increase light transmission, BRESSER monoculars offer a range of options from standard full coating to advanced multi-coating.
Designed to last – the monocular housing
Besides the optics, there are a few other things to consider before you choose your monocular. Since outdoor adventures can be tough, the housing needs to be durable. A (partially) rubberised coating on the housing protects the optics from knocks and provides a better grip. However, there can be differences in quality. The robust rubber armour on all BRESSER monoculars is resistant to light and sun exposure under normal use.
Do you often venture out in bad weather? Then a waterproof monocular is a wise choice, as it prevents moisture from entering. An additional protective gas filling stops the lenses from fogging up inside during sudden temperature changes, ensuring you always have a clear view. Glasses wearers should look for monoculars with either a foldable rubber eyecup or a twist-up eyecup, which allow you to adjust the eye relief for comfortable viewing, even with glasses.
